18 Feb Club Day Race Report

Our first Club Day for 2007 saw another weekend of awesome weather. It was so hot that a group of members hunted out the dummy grid sails and had them up in record time to provide some respite for the drivers waiting to hit the track and also for pit gate officiando Merv.

The Cadet class saw Girls Rule!! Kaitlyn Wonnacott & Aimee Rutherford showed the boys a clean pair of heels in taking out 1 st & 2 nd places overall. Connor Adams, having his very first club day, went really well; although he will have to set the alarm clock for a little earlier on our next race day!!

The boys turned the tables on the girls in Junior Restricted with the top 3 placings going to Oliver Pykett, Shaun Grocock & Zane O’Gara. Oliver had a clean sweep with five wins from five starts.

Junior Yamaha was a mixture of old hands and new faces. It was great to see drivers from close neighbour Mt Wellington and not quite so close Whangarei clubs. Hope you enjoyed your day, lads, and we’ll see you again. Henry Thomas-Kircher won the day by just one point from Adam Davis and Michael Hurliman, running from ROF, finished in third.

Tim Vickers won Formula Junior, but Declan Hull had the biggest grin. These two battled all day and the driving standard was exceptional. Mason Armstrong took third place and Scott Reddish, recently returned to the karting scene, finished in fourth.

Club Class saw Shaun Curran’s consistency see him take the overall win from Garry Cullum who was as consistent as Shaun, just mostly behind him.

Senior Yamaha Lights & Heavys ran together on the track, which made for interesting racing when the quicker heavies caught up with the lights. Got a bit confusing in Race Control with two number twelves that looked awfully alike but they got over it! The Kendall Boyz took 1 st & 2 nd in heavies and Ryan Ashwood – first race day in seniors – took out the lights from Karl Greenland.

Kendall was the front name again in Senior Rotax with Dion taking the days overall win from Grant Wilson and Dion Hubers. Judging by the chat amongst the drivers in this class after racing had finished they all had a ball but it was Kevin Wylie who provided the most entertainment with his trek up the bank at Death Valley. Kevin assures us that he can still get more air!

Graeme Smyth, the youngest driver in the class, took out Senior Open from Jason Farmilo & Andrew Hall and Thomas Parsons had a much better day on the track than he had at City of Sails.
