Trophy Day ’09 saw the running of the St Johns Shield, Crawford Cup - these both long standing awards within Auckland Club - and the Junior Yamaha Motul Cup - a more recent addition to the Clubs silverware but no less important.
The St Johns Shield was contested by Senior Yamaha Heavy, this being the biggest class - number of competitors, not size, for those of you who are having a giggle!
The racing was spectacular, exciting & close. Leyton Kendall & Brendon Smith, who regularly battle it out on club days had to contend with visitor Steven Currie as well.
Our two local heroes succumbed to Steven who took the days win by just one point from Leyton, with Brendon in third & Shaun Curran fourth.
Junior Yamaha & Formula J were on track together, with the Yamahas fighting it out for the Motul Cup. Rollo Davies, with an all-but-clean-sweep, taking the honours from Jamie Lane & Nicholas Carpenter. Callum McDonald finished in fourth overall & this young man drove extremely well all day in the trying conditions.
Formula J class went to Daniel Connor, with Shaun Varney second & Matt Derrick third.
The Cadet Class was another that provided exciting close racing from the front runners of Lachlan Smith, Alex Edwards & Brad Wilson. So much so that it was these three drivers selected by the Senior Track Official to contest the Crawford Cup - a three lap shoot out.
Lachlan won the Cadet Class overall for the day, on count back from Alex and Brad finished third. The tables were turned a bit with the Crawford Cup however; Alex taking this one home with Brad second - & setting the fastest lap time over the 3 laps - & Lachlan third.
Testament to Mother Nature, due to our Cadets growing up our club JR numbers are increasing and this class too provided good racing on Sunday. Joe Ganley had the measure of his competitors & took the days win from Kaitlyn Wonnacott with Connor Westbury in third. Jacob Smith, first time out in this class, finished in fourth - just! Probably because in the third heat he was the only one who took the chequered flag.
Were there free doughnuts being handed out in the weigh shed? Is that why the rest of the JR’s left the track 2 laps early? Or is this something from the X-Files………
Speaking of growing up - it really doesn’t seem that long ago when Levi Madsen-Prinn won the North Island title for JR’s. On Sunday Levi, recently moved to the senior ranks, showed a clean pair of wheels to all in Yamaha Light. Nigel Kurtz, battling jet-lag, was second & Scott Burkhart third.
A good field of Club Class ran with the Yamaha Lights where Todd McCormack took a convincing overall win from Sharn Connor & Peter Stacey.
As they are getting used to doing on club days, Rotax & Open ran together on track. Anthony Murch continued his dominance of the Heavy section, winning from Cameron Dennis & Colin Lewis while lonesome Andre Elliot won Lights. Matt Wallace & Steve Cox had a good battle for Open honours; Matt prevailing over Steve, with Brendon Brownie in third.
This club day we welcomed back to the fold Graeme Jones. Graeme is a past racing member of Auckland Club and was an active committee member. He has returned to take up the task of starter and we extend both a welcome back & our thanks.
If we thought the weather was !@#!?>!! In Auckland on Sunday bear a thought for those contesting the Christchurch Enduro Day. Sunday morning was -5 at around 8am. It really warmed up though! It got to 0 by mid-day.
Congratulations go to two Auckland drivers who teamed up with local Chch members - Ryan Grant with Andy Knight won the event!
Graeme Smyth with Josh Burgess had both the fastest qualifying time and fastest lap time in the race itself.
Top Half - Top Half sets itself for the third round on July 26 th at Hamilton. Awesome track!
Come on Auckland Club Members; if you have a B-Rating this is the event for you! You can enter round by round so a ‘series entry’ is not an excuse. Let’s support the club and those drivers who are already representing our club in the Top Half Series.
Auckland drivers currently in the top 6 of their respective classes are - Alex Edwards, Lachlan Smith, Kaitlyn Wonnacott, Joe Ganley, Nicholas Carpenter, Adam Davis & Garry Cullum.
