Club Champs 2009

Congratulations to all our 2009 Kartsport Auckland Club Champions; some who successfully defended their 2008 titles and others who achieved their first Club Champs title.

With the cancellation of KZ2 on Saturday, two classes were contested. As the weather was pretty dreadful the KZ2 lads probably made the right call! However the more staunch Cadets and Formula Juniors duly arrived and went racing.

Only one point each separated the overall top three placings in the Cadet Class, an indication of how close the racing was. Logan Brown reveled in the adverse conditions and took the win from Brad Wilson & Chelsea Herbert.

No-one in the Formula J Class had an answer to Daniel Connor; apart from the second heat where he had a mechanical issue, Daniel won all races comfortably. Mitchell Brown snatched second place from Shaun Varney by just one point.

Sunday saw the rest of the Club Champs classes being contested, and the weather was the exact opposite from the previous day – clear blue skies and a fast DRY track. There must’ve been a lot of prayers said on Saturday night!

First up were the JR’s; this class totally dominated on the day by Kaitlyn Wonnacott. Second place went to Joel Herbert, with Connor Westbury in third.

Deon Forrest regained his Yamaha Light crown in 2009 with a clean sweep of all races and substantial winning margins. Matt Higham pipped Matt Wallace by just one point for second.

Scott Burkhart farewelled Club Class with a clear win in the 2009 Club Champs, the smashing of the Club Class track record - 3 times! - and the earning of his B-rating. Sharn Connor finished in second place and Luis Cachero third.

Yamaha Heavy saw Leyton Kendall prevail once again in taking the honours ahead of Brendon Smith & Adam Davis.

Junior Yamaha saw some good racing and the front running shared around a bit; Rollo Davies took the win from Jamie Lane & Nicholas Carpenter.

Kane Taylor successfully defended his 2008 title with a clean sweep of Rotax Light, Scott Reddish took second place & Whitney Claxton third.

Open Class was another clean sweep going to Graeme Smyth from James Jackson and Thomas Parsons. Commiserations go out to Brett Hollander who retired early in the day due to engine issues.

Rotax Heavy was the largest class on track and Anthony Murch had his work cut out to win this; but win he did, with five wins from five starts. Warren Parris must’ve had a couple of extra weetbix on Sunday; he was on fire and took second place from Garry Cullum.

Last race of the day was the Open GP – this being for all senior drivers in any class with a random grid draw raced over 15laps. With the two 125cc KZ2/Open karts starting from the rear of the grid it was going to be exciting stuff. Testament to the excitement were the group of Cadets/JR’s viewing the race from Race Control and the ensuing Ohhs & Ahhs each time a passing manoevre was made.

Graeme Smyth was first home, with James Jackson in second. Kane Taylor took third, the only other driver to remain on the lead lap.
