The 2009 TOTALSPAN City of Sails 2-Day Challenge was contested at Kartsport Aucklands Pallet Company Raceway over the Auckland Anniversary weekend of January 24 th/25 th.

The Cadet Class, sponsored by Cosgrave Awards, was the first to hit the track in glorious sunshine & scorching temperatures that lasted all weekend.

Day one saw Brazilian visitor, Zaiya Fontana, in a field of 21 drivers, demonstrate exceptional driving skills and take three wins from four starts with Mitchell Turner and Dylan Drysdale in hot pursuit. Day two saw a change in fortunes; Turner & Drysdale coming to the fore & local driver Alex Edwards finding some pace. Turner eventually took the Cadet title from Drysdale & Edwards, with Fontana holding fourth place from Chelsea Herbert.

The Alpha Karts Junior Restricted Class saw a battle of the giants - albeit young giants! The quality of this class could not be disputed and, as predicted, the racing was fast, furious and of an exceptional standard. Aaron Wilson did have the upper hand for the majority of the weekend and took the 2009 title from Rhys Tinney who was closely followed by Maddison Wise and Josh Drysdale.

The Vehicle & Construction Maintenance Junior Yamaha Class saw Daniel Kinsman emphatically repeat his 2008 win in this class with 7 wins from 8 starts. Levi Madsen-Prinn and Stan Tagaroa-Green filled 2 nd and 3 rd spots with Jamie Lane in 4 th.

The Sheppard Industries Formula Junior class saw total domination from Bradley Hicks; Hicks winning by a 7 point margin from Mitchell Keys with Aaron Hodgson in 3 rd.

The Kendall Performance Senior Yamaha Light class was the second leg of the Kinsman Family double - again! - with brother Mathew emulating Daniels performance in Junior; and repeating his 2008 result. Again, Kinsman had to fight hard to take the title from rival Deon Forrest who, in turn, was battling to hold off Matthew Bufton & Alex Geary.

Kane Taylor made it four years running in the Right Karts sponsored Senior Rotax Light class; taking the win from Ryan Urban and current North Island champ Matthew Griffin. Scott Reddish, newly moved up to the senior ranks filled fourth spot.

Individual race results were spread around in the Marshall Batteries Senior Rotax Heavy class and overall points were close. Anthony Murch took the overall win from Darren Aislabie and Brendon Hart.

The Design Steel sponsored Senior Open class saw the 125cc reliability prevail - just! - over the faster 250cc. Ryan Grant taking the win from Ryan Urban, with his second 2 nd placing for the weekend, and Graeme Smyth in 3 rd.
