Auckland Club’s Enduro Day is now pretty much entrenched on the annual calendar and this years event proved its popularity. 89 drivers rocked up for the ultimate test of kart, driver & crew.
The Enduro event is continually being refined year after year. The biggest gripe - seniors weights - hasn’t gone away; and probably never will, but as we had a full field in the seniors it can’t be that much of an issue. Or maybe those that contested the event had it sorted. For those that have a serious concern in this area; drivers briefing on the day of the event is not the place to vent. Too Late! The rules & regs are in place.
However, there will be another Enduro Day in 2009 and your input is welcome. Think it out & bring it to committee for discussion.
A couple of changes this year; Cadets got two Enduros - a half hour for each one with the combined laps of both runs deciding the overall placegetters.
Junior Restricted were given the option of two driver teams or individuals and the length of the race was increased. Interesting that the majority of the JR’s chose to run as teams; we obviously got it right with that change to the format!
The Junior Yamaha/Formula Junior Enduro was also increased in length.
Junior Restricted was the first of the Enduros on track; the hard luck award going to Kaleb Currie, running as an individual, who led nearly the entire race until losing a chain. The team of Aaron Wilson & Kaitlyn Wonnacott had mechanical issues as well. But, Enduros are about survival, preparation and a wee bit of luck. It was Stephen Kelly/Sam Carpenter prevailing over Jonathan Buxeda/Andre Heimgartner in 2 nd with Emilee Wright/Luke Dobbs in 3 rd.
Next up was ‘Stage 1’ of the Cadets - 30 minutes of racing for 14 drivers with 1 compulsory pit stop for fuel. It was the pit stops that were the deciders. Lachlan Smith had a blinder, and he went on to win from Brad Wilson & Nathan Reid with a lap up his sleeve going into ‘Stage 2’
In the second stage of the Cadet Enduro Day Lachlan Smith had a wee issue early on & lost track position. With that lap up his sleeve from the first stage all he needed to do was stay on the lead lap & he was home & dry. And he did. Brad Wilson took the Stage 2 win from Alex Edwards but it was Lachlan with the overall win with Brad in 2 nd and Alec 3 rd.
Junior Yamaha & Formula Junior were all together on track with more individual drivers than teams. Nick Cassidy, Formula J, headed home Daniel Connor & Oliver Pykett while in Yamaha it was Mitchell Brown/Alex Cassidy from Adam Davis/Levi Madsen-Prinn & Jack Barker/Nicholas Carpenter.
Our Senior Enduro overall result saw Yamaha prevail once again. Steve Currie/Deon Forrest a lap clear of Anthony Murch/Matt Wallace and several laps up on Matthew Griffin/Paul Cameron. Some teams had a great day, some were not so lucky; this being the nature of enduros. For those of you happy with your achievement - well done; for those not - see you next year for another crack at it.
One odd incident in the senior race - karts are transformers……..
