2008 Top Half Round 3 - Mt. Wellington

Trying weather conditions greeted Top Half Round 3 at Mt Wellington and tested the fortitude of drivers and officials alike. Curved balls were thrown left, right & centre as the conditions dictated. Drivers who had been dominant in the previous rounds were not so dominant and dark horses began to shine.

The Cadet class was the largest on track, & the only class to oversubscribe. Aucklands Logan Brown was unstoppable in his first three heats - winning all in the wet & taking the days overall win from series leader Thomas Mclean and Alex Edwards.

Junior Restricted was another large class, with nineteen drivers on the track. No one driver had a clear advantage on the day and the overall result came down to who had the better consistency. Bradley Hicks took the days win from Aaron Wilson with Joel Herbert in third.

Junior Yamaha provided some exciting racing at the front of the pack. Heat three, especially, saw Rex Edwards, Arie Hutton and Hayden Pedersen trading positions several times a lap - while Daniel Kinsman extended his lead in first place! Overall, it was Kinsman in top spot, with four wins and a third, with Edwards in second & Hutton third.

Formula Junior saw the Battle of the Blomqvists. It was the younger of the two, Paul, who took the win on countback with the brothers finishing the day on equal points. Matt Hollier, who drove a superb race in the final, took third spot with Ben Drummond in fourth.

The weather & track conditions played a part in the racing for Senior Yamaha Light as far as some individual heat results went but the overall for the day came out pretty much as anticipated. Mat Kinsman taking the win from David Meszaros with Ethan de Jong in third. This class will go to the wire at the final round.

Rotorua’s Darren Aislabie and Auckland’s Brendon Smith shared the wins in Senior Yamaha Heavy - till the final when Stuart Marshall stepped up & took that one. Overall for the round was Aislabie, Dion Kendall & Marshall, with Smith in fourth.

Aucklands Kane Taylor managed a third overall win in Senior Rotax Light from the Mt Wellington duo of Ben Dallas & Mason Armstrong who took third position from Adam Wrightson on countback.

Mike Grimshaw didn’t finish worse than second all day in Senior Rotax Heavy, & these results gave him the overall win. It was closer in the minor placings with Brad Alexander pipping Hamilton’s Kyle Whitehead for second, another result being decided on countback.

In the clash of the clubs, Hamilton is holding first place from Whangarei, with Auckland in third.
